╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
╔NTRODUCTION
╘HE ╔NDEX ╞ILE IS A PROGRAM THAT IS INTENDED TO DUPLICATE THE
FUNCTIONS OF A TYPICAL THREE BY FIVE INDEX CARD FILE. ╔T IS FOR USE
ON A ├OMMODORE 64, AND REQUIRES A 1541 DISK DRIVE. ╔T WAS WRITTEN BY
╩EFF ┬EAN, AND IS INTENDED FOR FREE DISTRIBUTION.
╘YPICAL USES INCLUDE CATALOGING OF RECORD COLLECTIONS, RECIPES, AND
LISTS OF CUSTOMERS OR CLIENTS. ╔T IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL FOR THE TYPE
OF FILE WHERE YOU OFTEN WANT TO SEARCH FOR ENTRIES THAT HAVE A SPECIAL
SET OF ATTRIBUTES. ╘HE PROGRAM'S MAIN STRENGTH IS THAT IT CAN SEARCH
THROUGH EVERY ENTRY IN THE FILE MUCH FASTER THAN YOU CAN THUMB THROUGH
A BOX FULL OF INDEX CARDS. ┬UT YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND THAT ╘HE ╔NDEX
╞ILE HAS NO ADVANTAGE OVER A MANUAL FILE IF ALL YOU NEED IS SIMPLE,
ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED INDEX FILE. ┴LSO, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A
PROGRAM TO MANAGE A MAILING LIST, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU - THERE ARE MANY
OTHER PROGRAMS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR MAILING LISTS THAT WILL WORK
BETTER THAN THIS ONE.
┴LTHOUGH THE PROGRAM CAN BE USED TO MAINTAIN SEVERAL FILES, EACH FILE
OCCUPIES A SINGLE DISK. ┴ FILE CAN CONTAIN UP TO 200 RECORDS, WHERE A
"RECORD" CONSISTS OF 1 TO 23 LINES OF INFORMATION. ╘O ENTER DATA INTO
THE FILE, YOU SIMPLY TYPE THE DATA ONTO THE SCREEN USING ANY FORMAT
YOU CHOOSE. ┴NY WORDS THAT YOU TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS ARE PLACED
INTO A "KEYWORD" INDEX. ╙UBSEQUENTLY, YOU CAN RETRIEVE RECORDS FROM
THE FILE USING THOSE KEYWORDS. ╞ACILITIES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE FOR
UPDATING, DELETING AND PRINTING RECORDS IN THE FILE. ╞INALLY, YOU CAN
DISPLAY ON THE SCREEN OR PRINT AN ALPHABETIZED LIST OF THE FIRST LINE
OF EACH RECORD IN THE FILE.
╟ETTING ╙TARTED
╘HIS PROGRAM IS DISTRIBUTED ON DISK AS FOUR SEPARATE PROGRAM FILES.
╘HESE ARE:
╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╘HIS IS THE MAIN PROGRAM, WRITTEN IN ┬┴╙╔├.
╞╔╠┼.┬╔╬ ╘HIS CONTAINS THE MACHINE LANGUAGE SUBROUTINES.
USED FOR MAINTAINING AND SEARCHING THE INDEX
╙├╥┼┼╬ ╘HIS IS A SLIGHTLY MODIFIED VERSION OF ├OMMODORE'S
SCREEN EDITOR.
╚┼╠╨ ╘HIS CONTAINS THE TEXT OF THE HELP SCREENS.
╘O LOAD THE PROGRAM, TYPE ╠╧┴─ "╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼",8
╫HEN THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN LOADED, TYPE ╥╒╬
╘HE PROGRAM NAME WILL THEN BE DISPLAYED WHILE THE REMAINING THREE
PROGRAM FILES ARE LOADED. ╘HIS WILL TAKE ABOUT THIRTY SECONDS.
╫HEN ALL THE PROGRAM FILES HAVE BEEN LOADED, THE PROGRAM WILL ASK YOU
TO "╔NSERT DATA DISK" AND "╨RESS ANY KEY WHEN READY". ╔F THIS IS THE
FIRST TIME YOU HAVE USED THIS PROGRAM, THEN YOU WON'T HAVE ANY DATA

DISK YET, SO PRESS THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY - THIS WILL GET YOU TO THE MAIN
MENU SCREEN. ╔F THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST TIME, THEN REPLACE THE
PROGRAM DISK WITH THE DISK THAT CONTAINS THE INDEX FILE THAT YOU WANT
TO WORK WITH.
╔F THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE USED THE PROGRAM, THEN YOU SHOULD
SELECT THE "├REATE ╬┼╫ FILE" OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU BY TYPING ╬ AND
THEN PRESSING THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╘HE PROGRAM WILL THEN ASK YOU TO "┼NTER
FILE NAME". ╔N THE SPACE SHOWN TYPE THE NAME YOU WANT TO GIVE TO YOUR
NEW FILE, THEN PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╬EXT THE PROGRAM WILL ASK YOU
FOR THE "─ISK ╔─". ┘OU MAY TYPE ANY TWO LETTERS OR NUMBERS YOU LIKE,
BUT PREFERABLY YOU SHOULD PICK AN ╔─ CODE THAT IS NOT THE SAME AS ONE
YOU USED IN FORMATTING ANOTHER DISK IN YOUR COLLECTION. ╫HEN YOU
PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY, THE PROGRAM WILL INSTRUCT YOU TO "╔NSERT BLANK
DISK" AND "╨RESS ANY KEY WHEN READY". ╥EMOVE THE PROGRAM DISK AND
INSERT AN UNUSED DISK (OR AT LEAST ONE THAT DOESN'T CONTAIN ANYTHING
YOU CARE TO PRESERVE). ┬E CAREFUL HERE BECAUSE THE PROGRAM WILL ERASE
WHATEVER DISK YOU USE. ╔F YOU HAVEN'T GOT A BLANK DISK AND DON'T WANT
TO CONTINUE, PRESS THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY TO GET BACK TO THE MAIN MENU.
╘HE DISK WILL MAKE SOME STRANGE NOISES AND CHURN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO
WHILE THE DISK IS BEING FORMATTED. ┘OU WILL THEN SEE A NUMBER OF
MESSAGES ON THE SCREEN LIKE "SAVING KEYWORDS" AS THE PROGRAM BUILDS
THE INDEX FILE ON THE NEWLY FORMATTED DISK. ╫HEN THIS IS ALL DONE,
THE PROGRAM WILL DISPLAY THE MAIN MENU AGAIN.
╚ELP ╙CREENS
╔F YOU JUST LET THE COMPUTER SIT FOR A WHILE WITHOUT PRESSING ANY OF
THE KEYS, AFTER ABOUT TWENTY SECONDS THE PROGRAM WILL REMIND YOU THAT
HELP IS AVAILABLE BY PRESSING THE ├OMMODORE LOGO KEY AT THE BOTTOM
LEFT OF THE KEYBOARD.
╔F YOU HOLD DOWN THE ├OMMODORE KEY THE PROGRAM WILL DISPLAY A FULL
SCREEN OF INFORMATION THAT IS PERTINENT TO THE SCREEN THAT YOU WERE
LOOKING AT. ┴S SOON AS YOU LET GO OF THE ├OMMODORE KEY, THE ORIGINAL
SCREEN WILL RETURN UNCHANGED. ╘HIS HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SIX MOST
COMMONLY USED PROGRAM FUNCTIONS. ╙IMPLY HOLD DOWN THE ├OMMODORE KEY
(YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE FLASHING REMINDER).
╘HE ═AIN ═ENU
╘HE MAIN MENU PRESENTS A LIST OF THINGS THAT YOU CAN ASK THE PROGRAM
TO DO. ┼ACH ITEM IN THE LIST IS PRECEDED BY A LETTER OF THE ALPHABET.
┘OU TELL THE COMPUTER WHICH ACTION YOU WANT TO TAKE BY TYPING A LETTER
AND THEN PRESSING THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╔F YOU SELECT AN OPTION AND THEN
CHANGE YOUR MIND AND DECIDE YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IT AFTER ALL, YOU CAN
RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU BY PRESSING THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY.

╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
╙ ╙┼┴╥├╚ FOR RECORDS
╘HIS IS WHERE THE REAL POWER OF THIS PROGRAM LIES. ╒SING THIS OPTION,
YOU CAN INSTRUCT THE COMPUTER TO SCAN THROUGH YOUR FILE LOOKING FOR
ANY KEYWORD OR COMBINATION OF KEYWORDS. ╘HIS IS EXPLAINED IN MORE
DETAIL UNDER "╙EARCHING THE FILE".
┴ ┴── NEW RECORDS
╙ELECT THIS OPTION TO ADD RECORDS TO YOUR FILE. ┘OU WILL BE PRESENTED
WITH A MOSTLY BLANK SCREEN ON WHICH YOU SHOULD TYPE THE INFORMATION TO
BE STORED IN THE FILE. ╫HEN YOU HAVE FINISHED TYPING, HOLD DOWN THE
╙╚╔╞╘ KEY AND PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╘HE COMPUTER WILL THEN RECORD
YOUR DATA IN THE FILE, AND PLACE ANY WORDS THAT YOU TYPED IN CAPITAL
LETTERS INTO THE INDEX. ╘HE PROCEDURE FOR ADDING RECORDS IS DESCRIBED
IN MORE DETAIL UNDER "┼NTERING DATA".
╠ ╠╔╙╘ TITLES
╫HEN YOU ENTER A RECORD INTO THE FILE USING THE PROCEDURE DESCRIBED
ABOVE, THE TOP LINE OF THE SCREEN SERVES A SPECIAL PURPOSE. ╔T IS
CALLED THE TITLE LINE, AND IS AUTOMATICALLY ENTERED INTO AN
ALPHABETICAL LIST OF TITLE LINES FOR EACH RECORD IN THE FILE. ╘HE
╠╔╙╘ OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU IS USED TO DISPLAY THE TITLE LINES IN
ALPHABETICAL ORDER. ┘OU CAN SCAN THROUGH THE TITLE LINES, AND THEN IF
YOU FIND ONE THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN YOU CAN TELL THE COMPUTER TO
DISPLAY THE COMPLETE RECORD BY TYPING THE NUMBER SHOWN NEXT TO THE
TITLE.
╨ ╨╥╔╬╘ TITLES
╘HIS OPTION IS SIMILAR TO THE ╠╔╙╘ TITLES OPTION. ╘HE DIFFERENCE IS
THAT IT PRINTS THE LIST OF TITLES ON YOUR PRINTER, INSTEAD OF ON THE
SCREEN. ═AKE SURE THAT YOU PRINTER IS TURNED ON AND READY TO GO
BEFORE YOU SELECT THIS OPTION.
├ ─ISPLAY FILE ├┴╨┴├╔╘┘
╔F YOU CHOOSE THIS OPTION, THE COMPUTER WILL SHOW YOU HOW MUCH OF THE
SPACE IN YOUR FILE HAS BEEN FILLED UP AND HOW MUCH SPACE REMAINS.
╘HERE ARE THREE MEASURES OF FILE USAGE - KEYWORDS, RECORDS AND TEXT
LINES. ┼ACH WORD THAT IS TYPED IN CAPITAL LETTERS IS ENTERED INTO THE
KEYWORD INDEX; THERE IS ROOM FOR 800 KEYWORDS. ┼ACH RECORD (SCREENFUL
OF INFORMATION) THAT YOU ENTER INTO THE FILE REQUIRES SPACE IN THE
LIST OF TITLE LINES; THERE IS ROOM FOR 200 TITLE LINES. ┼ACH LINE OF
TEXT IN A RECORD REQUIRES SPACE ON THE DISK; THERE IS ROOM FOR JUST
UNDER 3000 LINES OF TEXT. ╬OTICE THAT IF YOU TYPED THE MAXIMUM 23
LINES OF TEXT IN EACH RECORD, YOU WOULD RUN OUT OF SPACE FOR TEXT
LINES BEFORE YOU REACHED THE 200 RECORD LIMIT. ╬ORMALLY THIS IS NOT A
PROBLEM SINCE MOST RECORDS WILL CONTAIN LESS THAN THE MAXIMUM NUMBER
OF LINES OF TEXT. ┴LSO, IF YOU USE THE SAME KEYWORD IN MORE THAN ONE
RECORD, THEN YOU GET A BARGAIN - EVERY FOUR IDENTICAL KEYWORDS USES UP
ONLY ONE KEYWORD SLOT.
╨AGE 3
╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
╞ ╙WITCH TO ANOTHER ╞╔╠┼
╘HIS OPTION IS USED WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH MORE THAN ONE FILE. ┬Y
SELECTING THIS OPTION YOU CAN TELL THE PROGRAM TO CLOSE THE FILE YOU
ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON, AND THEN OPEN ANOTHER FILE ON ANOTHER DATA
DISK. ╘O DO THIS, THE PROGRAM MUST SAVE THE KEYWORDS AND TITLES ON
THE DATA DISK (THESE ARE HELD IN MEMORY WHILE YOU ARE WORKING ON THE
FILE). ╔T WILL THEN INSTRUCT YOU TO INSERT THE NEW DATA DISK. ┴FTER
YOU HAVE DONE SO, PRESS ANY KEY AND THE PROGRAM WILL LOAD THE KEYWORDS
AND TITLES FROM THE NEW DISK.
╬ ├REATE ╬┼╫ FILE
╘HIS OPTION IS USED TO FORMAT A DISK AND BUILD THE SKELETON OF A NEW
INDEX FILE ON THE DISK. ╘HE PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED ABOVE UNDER THE
HEADING "╟ETTING STARTED".
╥ ╥┼┬╒╔╠─ INDEX
╘HIS OPTION IS USED FOR DISASTER RECOVERY. ┴S YOU ENTER, MODIFY OR
DELETE RECORDS IN YOUR FILE, THE TEXT LINES ARE RECORDED ON THE DISK,
BUT THE KEYWORDS AND TITLE LINES ARE RETAINED IN THE COMPUTER'S
MEMORY. ╔F THE COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF OR LOSES POWER, THEN THE
KEYWORD INDEX AND LIST OF TITLES WILL BE LOST. ┬Y SELECTING THE
╥┼┬╒╔╠─ INDEX OPTION, YOU CAN TELL THE PROGRAM TO RECONSTRUCT THE
KEYWORD INDEX AND TITLE LIST. ╘HIS IS DONE BY READING EACH LINE OF
TEXT FROM THE DISK AND SCANNING IT FOR KEYWORDS. ┴S YOU MIGHT
IMAGINE, THIS CAN BE A FAIRLY LENGTHY PROCEDURE, SO BE SURE THAT YOU
CLOSE OUT YOU FILES PROPERLY USING THE ┼╪╔╘ OPTION BEFORE YOU TURN OFF
THE COMPUTER.
┼ ┼╪╔╘ PROGRAM
╘HIS OPTION SHOULD BE USED TO GET OUT OF THE PROGRAM AND BACK TO THE
FAMILIAR ╥┼┴─┘ PROMPT. ╔F YOU HAVE NOT MADE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR FILE
SINCE YOU STARTED THE PROGRAM, THEN THE EXIT WILL BE VERY QUICK. ┬UT
IF YOU HAVE ENTERED, MODIFIED OR DELETED ANY RECORDS, THEN THE PROGRAM
WILL RECORD THE KEYWORD INDEX AND TITLE LIST ON THE DISK. ╘HIS MAY
TAKE UP TO A MINUTE OR MORE, DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF YOUR FILE.
╨AGE 4
╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
┼NTERING ─ATA
┴FTER YOU HAVE SELECTED THE "┴── NEW RECORDS" OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU,
YOU WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A SCREEN THAT IS BLANK EXCEPT FOR THE TOP
AND BOTTOM LINES AND A COLUMN OF BRACKETS ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT EDGES.
┘OU CAN TYPE YOUR INFORMATION ANAYWHERE ON THE SCREEN BETWEEN THE
BRACKETS - THE CURSOR KEYS, ├╠╥/╚╧═┼ AND ╔╬╙╘/─┼╠ KEYS WORK MOSTLY AS
YOU WOULD EXPECT. ╘HE EXCEPTION IS THAT WHEN YOU MOVE THE CURSOR UP
OR DOWN A LINE, IT ALWAYS JUMPS TO THE START OF THE LINE.
┴NY WORDS THAT YOU TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS WILL BE ENTERED INTO THE
KEYWORD INDEX. ╙O THINK ABOUT THE WAYS IN WHICH YOU YOU WILL LATER
SEARCH FOR THIS RECORD, AND THEN TYPE THE CRITICAL WORDS IN CAPITALS.
╫HEN YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE WAY YOU HAVE ENTERED YOUR DATA, HOLD
DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY AND THEN PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╘HE COMPUTER WILL
THEN RECORD YOUR RECORD ON THE DISK, AND THEN CLEAR THE SCREEN SO YOU
CAN ENTER ANOTHER RECORD. ╫HEN YOU HAVE FINISHED ENTERING RECORDS,YOU
CAN RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU BY PRESSING THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY.
╘HE FOLLOWING IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU MIGHT ENTER INFORMATION FOR A
CLASSICAL RECORD COLLECTION.

╘HIS EXAMPLE CONTAINS TEN LINES OF TEXT AND TEN KEYWORDS. ┴DJACENT
WORDS WITHOUT INTERVENING CHARACTERS LIKE "═┴╒╥╔├┼ ┴╬─╥┼" ARE INDEXED
AS A SINGLE KEYWORD. ╧N THE OTHER HAND, THE LAST LINE WILL BE INDEXED
AS THREE SEPARATE KEYWORDS BECAUSE OF THE INTERVENING SLASHES. ╘HE ┼
OF "┼ FLAT" IS NOT INDEXED BECAUSE IT IS TOO SHORT (WORDS OF ONE OR
TWO LETTERS ARE NOT INDEXED).
╬OW CONSIDER THE WAYS IN WHICH THE RECORD DESCRIBED ABOVE CAN BE

RETRIEVED. ╔T COULD BE FOUND IF YOU SEARCHED FOR ┬┴╥╧╤╒┼ AND ═┴╒╥╔├┼
┴╬─╥┼. ╧R YOU COULD FIND IT (ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS) BY SEARCHING FOR
├╧╬├┼╥╘╧╙. ┬UT IF YOU SEARCHED FOR "┼ ╞╠┴╘" YOU WOULD COME UP EMPTY
HANDED SINCE THIS WAS NOT TYPED IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
╚ERE ARE SOME THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN CHOOSING YOUR KEYWORDS.
1. ┬E CAREFUL ABOUT SPELLING. ╔F YOU MISSPELL AN IMPORTANT KEYWORD,
YOU WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY RETRIEVING THE RECORD LATER.
2. ┬E CONSISTENT IN YOUR CHOICE OF KEYWORDS. ╔F YOU ARE GOING TO
INCLUDE THE ORCHESTRA NAME AS A KEYWORD, DO SO FOR ALL YOUR
RECORDS.
3. ╘RY TO KEEP YOUR KEYWORDS TO TWENTY CHARACTERS OR LESS. ╧NLY THE
FIRST TWENTY CHARACTERS OF A STRING OF CAPITALIZED WORDS WILL BE
INDEXED.

╙EARCHING THE FILE
╫HEN YOU SELECT THE "╙┼┴╥├╚ FOR RECORDS" OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU, YOU
WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A SCREEN THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS:

┴

┴
╬

+----------------------+
╘HE INTENTION HERE IS THAT YOU TYPE THE KEYWORDS THAT YOU WISH TO
SEARCH FOR INTO THE OUTLINED AREAS. ╔F YOU WANT TO SEARCH FOR ONLY A
SINGLE KEYWORD, THEN YOU MAY ENTER IT ANYWHERE YOU LIKE - JUST TYPE IN
THE WORD AND THEN HOLD DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY AND PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY TO
START THE SEARCH.
┬UT FOR MORE COMPLEX SEARCHES, IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHERE YOU
PLACE THE KEYWORD. ╬OTICE THAT THE SCREEN HAS THREE BOXED-IN AREAS.
╘O THE LEFT OF EACH AREA IS THE WORD "┴╬─", WHILE THE WORD "╧╥"
APPEARS ON THE DIVIDING LINES BETWEEN THE AREAS.
╒SING OUR CLASSICAL RECORD COLLECTION AS AN EXAMPLE AGAIN, SUPPOSE YOU
WANTED TO SEARCH FOR ALL OF THE BAROQUE TRUMPET CONCERTOS IN YOUR
COLLECTION. ╘HERE ARE THREE KEYWORDS YOU WANT THE PROGRAM TO LOOK FOR
- ┬┴╥╧╤╒┼, ╘╥╒═╨┼╘ AND ├╧╬├┼╥╘╧╙. ╘O MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, THE
RECORDS TO BE RETRIEVED MUST CONTAIN ALL THREE KEYWORDS. ╘O PERFORM
SUCH A SEARCH YOU MUST TYPE ALL THREE KEYWORDS WITHIN A SINGLE
BOXED-IN AREA BECAUSE YOU WANT THE PROGRAM TO SEARCH FOR ┬┴╥╧╤╒┼ AND
╘╥╒═╨┼╘ AND ├╧╬├┼╥╘╧╙.
╬OW SUPPOSE THAT YOU WANT TO FIND ALL OF THE RECORDS IN YOUR
COLLECTION THAT INCLUDE WORKS BY EITHER ╚AYDN OR ╘ELEMANN. ╔N THIS
CASE YOU MUST TYPE THE TWO KEYWORDS IN SEPERATE AREAS, WITH THE "╧╥"
DIVIDING LINE BETWEEN THEM.
╬OW LETS GET MORE EVEN MORE COMPLICATED. ╙UPPOSE YOU WANT TO FIND ALL
WORKS BY ╚AYDN AND ╘ELEMANN THAT ARE PLAYED BY THE ╠ONDON
╨HILHARMONIC. ╘O SATISFY YOUR NEEDS THE PROGRAM MUST FIND RECORDS
THAT CONTAIN ╠╧╬─╧╬ ╨╚╔╠╚┴╥═╧╬╔├ AND ╚┴┘─╬, OR ╠╧╬─╧╬ ╨╚╔╠╚┴╥═╧╬╔├ AND

╫HEN YOU HAVE ENTERED THE KEYWORDS INTO THE APPROPRIATE SPACES, HOLD
DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY, AND THEN PRESS THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╘HE COMPUTER WILL
THINK FOR ABOUT FIVE SECONDS, AND THEN GIVE YOU ONE OF THREE POSSIBLE
RESPONSES.
╔F THE PROGRAM CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WITH THE COMBINATION OF KEYWORDS
YOU ASKED FOR, IT WILL DISPLAY "╬O MATCHING RECORDS FOUND" ON THE
BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN. ┘OU CAN SEARCH FOR SOMETHING ELSE SIMPLY BY
TYPING OVER THE KEYWORDS AND THEN PRESSING ╙╚╔╞╘ AND ╥┼╘╒╥╬.
╔F THE PROGRAM FINDS ONLY ONE RECORD THAT MEETS YOUR CRITERIA, THEN IT
WILL FETCH THE TEXT FROM DISK AND DISPLAY IT ON THE SCREEN IN THE SAME
FORMAT THAT YOU ENTERED IT. ╔F THIS IS NOT THE RECORD YOU WERE
LOOKING FOR, THEN PRESS THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY AND THE PROGRAM WILL
REDISPLAY THE SEARCH SCREEN WITH YOUR KEYWORDS. ┘OU HAVE OTHER
OPTIONS TOO, AS INDICATED BY THE BOTTOM LINE OF THE SCREEN. ┘OU CAN
PRESS THE ╞3 KEY TO PRINT THE SCREEN (MAKE SURE THE PRINTER IS READY
FIRST). ╔F YOU WANT TO CHANGE SOME OF THE TEXT ON THE SCREEN, PRESS
THE ╞5 KEY - YOU WILL THEN BE ABLE TO TYPE OVER ANY PART OF THE SCREEN
AND STORE THE MODIFIED TEXT BY PRESSING ╙╚╔╞╘ AND ╥┼╘╒╥╬. ╞INALLY YOU
CAN DELETE THE RECORD FROM THE FILE BY PRESSING THE ╞8 KEY (YOU WILL
NEED TO HOLD DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY FOR THIS).
╔F THE PROGRAM FINDS MORE THAN ONE ACCEPTABLE RECORD, THEN IT WILL
DISPLAY A LIST OF THE TITLE LINES FROM EACH ONE. ┴S BEFORE, IF YOU
DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU SEE, YOU CAN PRESS THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY TO RETURN TO
THE SEARCH SCREEN. ┴LTERNATIVELY YOU CAN SELECT ONE OF THE RECORDS BY
TYPING THE NUMBER SHOWN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LINE, AND THEN
PRESSING THE ╥┼╘╒╥╬ KEY. ╘HIS WILL CAUSE THE PROGRAM TO DISPLAY THE
COMPLETE RECORD ON THE SCREEN, AND YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME OPTIONS
AVAILABLE AS IF ONLY A SINGLE RECORD HAD BEEN FOUND. ╔F YOU WANT TO
RETURN TO THE LIST OF TITLE LINES JUST PRESS THE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY;
PRESSING IT TWICE TAKES YOU BACK TO THE SEARCH SCREEN.
╞INALLY, IF THE PROGRAM FINDS A WHOLE BUNCH OF RECORDS, THEN IT WILL
DISPLAY THE TITLE LINES OF THE FIRST NINE. ┘OU THEN HAVE THE OPTION
╨AGE 8
╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
OF PRESSING ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ TO GO BACK TO THE SEARCH SCREEN, SELECTING ONE OF
THE RECORDS FOR DISPLAY, OR PRESSING THE ╞1 KEY TO DISPLAY THE NEXT
NINE TITLE LINES. ╫HEN YOU GET TO THE END OF THE LIST OF TITLES,
PRESSING THE ╞1 KEY ONE MORE TIME WILL DISPLAY THE FIRST NINE TITLES
OVER AGAIN.
┴LL THIS TAKES A LOT OF EXPLAINING, BUT YOU WILL FIND THAT THE PROGRAM
WILL HELP YOU BY TELLING YOU WHAT YOUR OPTIONS ARE AT EACH STEP ALONG
THE WAY. ╚ERE ARE A FEW HINTS AND KINKS TO HELP YOU USE THE SEARCH
FACILITY:
1. ╘HE ╥╒╬/╙╘╧╨ KEY ALWAYS HAS THE EFFECT OF RETURNING YOU TO THE
PREVIOUS SCREEN. ╔F YOU PRESS IT ENOUGH TIMES YOU WILL GET BACK TO
THE MAIN MENU.
2. ╔T IS NOT NECESSARY TO TYPE THE KEYWORDS YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR IN
CAPITAL LETTERS. ╘HE PROGRAM WILL DO THIS FOR YOU.
3. ╘HE PROGRAM USES A "SUBSTRING" TYPE OF SEARCH. ╫HAT THIS MEANS IS
THAT A KEYWORD WILL BE CONSIDERED A MATCH IF IT CONTAINS THE WORD
YOU ASKED FOR ANYWHERE WITHIN IT. ╞OR EXAMPLE, SEARCHING FOR
"├╧╬├┼╥╘" WILL PRODUCE MATCHES ON ├╧╬├┼╥╘, ├╧╬├┼╥╘╧ AND ├╧╬├┼╥╘╧╙.
═ODIFYING AND DELETING DATA
╔N ORDER TO MODIFY OR DELETE A RECORD, YOU HAVE TO FIND IT FIRST. ╔F
YOU KNOW ONE OR MORE OF THE KEYWORDS IN THE RECORD YOU WANT, THEN YOU
CAN USE THE "SEARCH FOR RECORDS" OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU. ╒SE THE
PROCEDURE DESCRIBED ABOVE FOR ENTERING THE KEYWORDS TO BE SEARCHED
FOR. ╔F THIS TURNS UP SEVERAL RECORDS, THEN SCAN THROGH THE TITLES
AND SELECT THE RECORD YOU WANT TO WORK WITH BY ENTERING THE NUMBER
SHOWN NEXT TO THE TITLE.
┴LTERNATIVELY, YOU CAN USE THE "LIST TITLES" OPTION TO SCAN THROUGH
THE RECORD TITLES UNTIL YOU FIND THE ONE YOU WANT, AND THEN BRING IT
TO THE SCREEN BY ENTERING THE NUMBER SHOWN NEXT TO THE TITLE.
╧NCE YOU HAVE THE FULL TEXT OF THE RECORD ON THE SCREEN YOU WILL
NOTICE THAT THERE IS NO CURSOR ON THE SCREEN. ╔F YOU PRESS THE ╞5
KEY, THE TEXT WILL BE REDISPLAYED - THIS TIME WITH A CURSOR. ╬OW YOU
CAN ADD MORE INFORMATION, OR TYPE OVER ANY PART OF THE TEXT. ╫HEN YOU
ARE SATISFIED, HOLD DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY AND PRESS ╥┼╘╒╥╬ TO TELL THE
PROGRAM TO RECORD THE MODIFIED RECORD ON THE DISK.
╔F YOU JUST WANT TO ERASE THE RECORD FROM THE FILE, PRESS THE ╞8 KEY
(YOU WILL NEED TO HOLD DOWN THE ╙╚╔╞╘ KEY FOR THIS).
╔N ├ASE OF ╘ROUBLE
╔ HAVE TRIED TO MAKE THIS PROGRAM AS BULLETPROOF AS POSSIBLE, BUT THEN
INEVITABLY SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG. ╘HE MAIN THING TO BE AWARE OF IS
THAT YOU SHOULD NOT EVER TURN OFF THE COMPUTER OR REMOVE THE DATA DISK
FROM THE DRIVE WITHOUT FIRST SELECTING THE "EXIT PROGRAM" OPTION ON
THE MAIN MENU. ╔F YOU DO SO, THEN THE TITLE LIST AND KEYWORD INDEX
╨AGE 9
╘╚┼ ╔╬─┼╪ ╞╔╠┼ ╔NSTRUCTIONS
WILL NOT MATCH THE TEXT ON THE DISK. ╘HE MOSTLY LIKELY RESULT IS THAT
THE PROGRAM WILL WARN YOU THAT THE "INDEX IS CORRUPTED". ┴NOTHER
POSSIBLE RESULT IS THAT THE PROGRAM WILL RETURN RECORDS THAT DO NOT
MATCH THE KEYWORDS THAT YOU ASKED FOR. ╔F EITHER OF THESE THINGS
SHOULD HAPPEN, THEN YOU CAN REBUILD THE TITLE LIST AND KEYWORD INDEX
BY SELECTING THE "REBUILD INDEX" OPTION ON THE MAIN MENU.
╘HERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM DIRT OR OTHER
CONTAMINATION GETTING ONTO THE DISK. ╘HIS WILL PROBABLY RESULT IN
WARNINGS SUCH AS "READ ERROR" OR "WRITE ERROR". ╘HERE IS NO CURE FOR
SUCH PROBLEMS, SO THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO REGULARLY MAKE BACKUP
COPIES OF YOUR DATA DISKS. ╘HE "1541 ┬┴├╦╒╨" PROGRAM THAT IS
DISTRIBUTED ON ├OMMODORE'S DISK BONUS PACK WILL DO THE JOB VERY
NICELY.
╞INALLY, THERE IS ALWAYS THE CHANCE OF PROGRAM BUGS. ╔F YOU SHOULD
COME ACROSS WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE A BUG IN THE PROGRAM, YOU CAN GET
